Flexible "Do Not Disturb" (PVC) Door signs with Adaptive and Inclusive Design

A practical guide to specifying, designing, and ordering DND door signs for hotels with an innovative flexible die-cut, durable materials, and neutral iconography that avoids gender stereotypes, ensuring the inclusion of all staff. The goal is to provide concise recommendations on materials, manufacturing, and adaptive and inclusive design criteria for Do Not Disturb (DND) door signs, as well as a purchasing and prototyping process.

Manufacturing Material and Adaptive Design

  • Adaptive die-cut: an innovative hole design that stretches and adjusts to door handles of any thickness or shape, ensuring a perfect fit and preventing them from falling off.
  • PVC (flexible or semi-rigid): durable, waterproof, and easy to clean.

Technical Specifications

  • 300 microns thickness for good handling and durability.
  • Matte (fewer fingerprints) or **glossy** (more vibrant colors) finishes.
  • Full-color CMYK printing on both sides.
  • Flexible die-cut for universal compatibility with knobs and handles.

Text and Languages

  • Front side: “PLEASE MAKE UP ROOM” in the languages of ENGLISH, FRENCH, SPANISH, GERMAN, ITALIAN.
  • Back side: “PLEASE DO NOT DISTURB” in the languages of ENGLISH, FRENCH, SPANISH, GERMAN, ITALIAN.

Inclusive and Unisex Design for Staff and Guests

Key idea: replace “housekeeper” iconography with a smile symbol and "no entry" with a closed eye that are acceptable to any person. This design avoids gender roles and recognizes the work of all employees, both men and women.

    Neutral Iconography

    • Abstract or geometric silhouettes instead of human figures.
    • Universal symbols: a circle with a slash, a stylized bell/service icon, a door with a sign.
    • Avoid identifying attributes (apron, skirt, stereotypical features) to avoid discriminating against male and female staff.

    Accessibility

    • Adequate color contrast (WCAG AA or higher).
    • Minimum text size of 16 pt and highly legible pictograms.
    • Short, clear, and unambiguous texts.

    Customization

    • Editable templates to adapt to branding (colors, logo).
    • Numbered series/batches by floor or room category.
    • Optional antibacterial finish and protective laminate.
