Do you think it is not more than other marketing tool to sell more plastic based products?
In a principle, Plastarch Material (PSM) is a biodegradable and compostable material made primarily from plant starch, typically derived from sources like corn, potatoes, or sugarcane. It's often used as an alternative to traditional plastics in various applications, including packaging, utensils, and food containers.
In the hotel amenities sector, PSM can be particularly useful for single-use items such as toothbrush, razor, shower caps, cotton buds, and also cups, plates, cutlery, and toiletry containers. Many hotels are increasingly adopting environmentally friendly practices, and using PSM-based products aligns with these efforts by reducing reliance on petroleum-based plastics and minimizing environmental impact.
We can claim that PSM offers several benefits in this context:
Biodegradability: PSM products can break down naturally over time, reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills and decreasing environmental pollution.
Compostability: Some PSM products are compostable, meaning they can be converted into nutrient-rich compost under the right conditions, further reducing waste and benefiting soil health.
Renewable: Since PSM is derived from plant sources, it is renewable and reduces dependence on finite fossil fuel resources.
Reduced Carbon Footprint: The production of PSM typically generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional plastics, contributing to lower overall carbon footprints.
By incorporating PSM-based materials into their amenities, the hotels can demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, appealing to eco-conscious guests and aligning with global trends towards greener practices.
On the other hand, in sincere words, the PSM-based, referred also as biobased amenities need to be improved in respect of Plastarch content in the final product. The plastarch as PLA ingredient needs a strong binding component, and this is propylene, which is traditional plastic. The more PSM content the more biodegradable content.
To date of this blog post publication, the products with Plastarch Material (PSM) are mainly as following:
Disposable Cups and Lids: PSM-based disposable cups and lids are commonly used in hotel rooms for serving beverages such as coffee, tea, or water. These cups are lightweight, sturdy, and environmentally friendly, making them ideal for single-use applications.
Toiletry Containers: Hotel toiletry containers, such as shampoo bottles, conditioner bottles, and shower gel containers, can be made from PSM. These containers provide a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic bottles and contribute to reducing plastic waste in the hospitality industry.
Cutlery and Utensils: PSM-based cutlery and utensils, including forks, knives, spoons, and stirrers, are popular choices for hotel dining facilities and room service. These utensils are durable, heat-resistant, and fully compostable, making them suitable for eco-friendly food service operations.
Food Packaging: PSM is also used in food packaging for items such as takeout containers, salad bowls, and clamshells. These containers are microwave-safe, grease-resistant, and biodegradable, offering a sustainable solution for hotel restaurants and catering services.
Trash or Service Bags: Biodegradable trash bags or service bags like laundry bag or hygiene bag made from PSM are used in hotel rooms, housekeeping carts, and waste disposal areas. These bags break down naturally over time, reducing the environmental impact of hotel waste management practices.
For your hospitality establishment, you can incorporate these hotel amenities into your hotel products portfolio.
